I saw her today at the reception...

tis the season to..... check out the awesome dayfour show at the printspace. the show is an exploration of something we in the affluent West have become very used to over the past few years: the ability to have most of our desires satisfied with comparative ease. In this issue and exhibition, the contributors were asked to think about wishes, desires, lusts, hopes, expectations. the 28 contributors responded in surprisingly varied and personal ways.

more taylor wessing...

nice eh !!

and the winner isn't....

the npg taylor wessing portrait prize has come around again and again this year it is filled with beautiful work. again though, it seems to be an ongoing trend that the judges top picks of the bunch all have one thing in common, adolescents. so in order to redress the balance I have chosen some of my top picks with a distinctly non-youth obsessed edge.

the new curiosity shop

After 3 years and 61 million pounds spent britains oldest museum, the ashmolean, has re-opened its doors following an impressive re-build and expansion under the watchful eye of architect rick mather. where else in the world can you see lawrence of arabia's robes next to a titian masterpiece, wonderful.

super heroes

'complete hero' by martin firrell, a film installation located on the walls of the guards chapel, spiritual home of the household division of the british army uses the thoughts and voices of servicemen and women to challenge our pre-conceived notions of heroism. Moving, poignant and timely.

stuck on you

'it wasn't meant to end like this' sculpture by the sea, 2009

'hot with a chance of a late storm' sculpture by the sea, 2006

ever since I witnessed the real challenge of owning an ice cream van in a heatwave in 2006, I have marvelled at the the sheer diversity and wit of the glue society. writers, directors and designers that are champions of art, advertising and television, what is not to love?

more ap 25

still on the american photography 25 tip, I find myself strangely drawn to this witty pair of portraits by miller mobley

ap 25

about a week ago the winners of american photography 25 were announced, it has taken me this long to look beyond the glut of images of presidential candidates/supporters/winners to find some truly outstanding images. amongst which are these haunting shots of sleeping soldiers by tim hetherington.

no understanding........

if you happening to be wandering aimlessly around Italy some time in the next couple of weeks be sure to check out this exhibition. having recently finished a 6 week run at kemistry in london, 'no understanding between the brain and the hands' has just opened at the pocko gallery milan. inspired by the classic fritz lang film metropolis, it is a group show featuring collaborations between 9 illustrators and 4 photographers (one of which is me).

nypha 09

the winners from this years new york photography festival awards have just been announced and I'm not one of them. I came close with a nomination in the fine art category but not a close as justin james king who picked up a resounding victory with this stunning series 'and still we gather with infinite momentum'.
